Abstract

SAMPLE APPLICATION REGARDING THE CREATION OF AUTHENTIC PATTERNS IN WOODBLOCK PRINTING

Even though there are some archeological remains and written resources regarding the traditional block printing (yazmacılık), it is still hard to identify the exact origins of the technique. Archeological excavations and document analyses reveal that its origins may date back to the Stone or Bronze Age, since this art involves traditional printing techniques. Several objects and molds through which motifs are created on wax or clay materials can be regarded as preliminary examples in these eras. When traditional printing samples are examined, the dominant motifs are found as flowers and fruits. That is, the design and composition of the prints are realized through translating the motifs in the nature. In addition, craftsmen and artisans craved the characteristics of their living spaces into the prints. Thus, similar or same patterns have been utilized for centuries with slight differences that stem from the dexterity of the artisans and masters. In the current study, it was considered that artisans can generate authentic patterns through interpreting traditional woodblock printing with a contemporary approach. In this respect, authentic woodblock printing motifs were developed to create a different effect without deviating from the basic principles of the art. A proposal to obtain concrete and authentic patterns from abstract drawings was formulated, and sample works were introduced.
