Abstract

THE WAGE ESTIMATION WITH HUMAN CAPITAL MODEL FOR TEXTILE SECTOR: THE CASE OF BURSA

In order to determine the factors that are effective in determining the sectoral wages of the employees, survey was applied 2000-person in Bursa. The share of the textile industry in Bursa corresponds to approximately 15%. Therefore, 15% of the applied survey is 300 employees working in the textile sector. Firstly, without discrimination of sex, later on wage models were estimated in the framework of human capital model for men and women. In the general models, it is seen that all of the independent variables used have significant effect on wage. However, when the predicted models for men and women are compared, the following conclusions are reached. In the estimated wage model for both men and women; year of education, knowledge of foreign languages and having a driver's license were statistically significant. Differently, men's experience in the wage model, office programs usage information and marital status variables have a positive effect on the working wage. When the model estimation results are examined, it is found that in the textile sector, male workers’ wages are on averagely 10% higher than female worker. Besides it was determined that female employees who have a driver’s license are charged about 16% more than female employees who do not have a driver's license, and that this female employee has an additional 16% increase in their pays if they have foreign language knowledge. Therefore, it can be said that women who have foreign language knowledge in the textile sector and who have a driver license are demanding more wages to participate in the labor force. For the male workers, although similar cases is valid foreign language skills are a little more important in men working on the wage.
