Abstract


AN EXAMPLE OF THE REPRESENTATION OF ARABS IN CINEMA: “AMERICAN SNIPER”

While setting its own dominant ideolojical cinematic narrative, Hollywood is biased to worlds’ other nations and is acting within particular stereotyped structures. Yet, those exposed to these stereotyped representations are the Middle Esterners and Arabs. Arabs are intensely represented as “barbaric, terrorist, radical and Muslim in Hollywood Cinema. These representations, on the one hand, forms Arabs as other and on the other hand serves internalization of American policies. In this study, following the exemplifying of various movies about the representation of Arabian identity, othering practices of Arabs, specifically in the movie American Sniper, 2014 which is considered to be set an example in the current representation of Arabs are tried to be analyzed. In this context, through the main character Chris Kyle in the movie, it is observed that policies of the U.S. in the invasion of Iraq have been legitimized and exalted and on the contrary, with the negative preconceptions used in the movie, Arabs are othered as “savages” and generalized as terrorists.
