Abstract

A SURVEY OF MUSIC TRAINING SELF-EFFICACIES OF STUDENTS AT CONSERVATOIRES TURKISH FOLK DANCE DEPARTMENTS

This research investigates whether or not the self-efficacy perception levels of senior students at conservatoires’ Turkish folk dance departments regarding music training differ based on various factors. The study group of the research consists of students continuing their studies at Turkish Folk Dance Departmens of Turkish Music State Conservatoires from 5 universities in the 2016-2017 academic year. The research was conducted through voluntary participation of senior students continuing their studies at Turkish Folk Dance Departmens of Turkish Music State Conservatoires from Dicle University (n = 28), Ege University (n = 20), Gaziantep University (n = 21), Giresun University (n = 23) and Sakarya University. The study group consists of 106 people, 52 (49.1%) of which are male, while 54 of which (50.9%) are females. The research employs the "Music Instruction Self-Efficacy Scale" consisting of 23 items developed by Özmentes (2011). The data obtained in the study were analyzed and evaluated through SPSS (version 20.0). Analyses employ the One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) with t-Test for unrelated groups. The results of the research suggest that self-efficacy levels of graduates of Turkish folk dance department at conservatoires’ regarding music training are intermediate (3,65). In this case, it is difficult to postulate that the music training self-efficacy levels of the Turkish folk dance students are "adequate". The results of the study, on the other hand, might suggest that the self-efficacy senior students studying at conservatoires Turkish folk dance departments towards music training show a tendency towards positive regarding the variables of students’ genders and the schools where they study. Notwithstanding the positive tendency of these two variables, the music training self-efficacy levels of graduates of Turkish folk dance department at conservatoires remain intermediate. This might suggest that Turkish folk dance students at conservatoires should receive courses related to music education major during their undergraduate studies.
