Abstract

ONE OF THE INTELLECTUALS OF TANZIMAT REFORM ERA: FATMA ALİYE

In this article, Fatma Aliye has been discussed as a female intellectual in Tanzimat Reform Era. As a second generation intellectual of Tanzimat Reform Era, in which the effects of modernisation were deeply felt, Fatma Aliye was raised in the painful atmosphere of the occidentalization and East-West contradicts. Fatma Aliye, who grounded her intellectualism within the frame of Ottoman-Islam values and norms, didn’t hesitate to take reference from Western science, but she based on Islam for lifestyle and values. Fatma Aliye, who defended the opinion that the progress of Ottoman society and its target of being a stronger society could take place with educated women and the children they raised, was determined to improve the social status of women all her life time. She tried to prove the value given to women by Islam and that Islam is not an obstacle for women empowerment, for this reason she became an inspiration for the next generations’ defence of women rights. However; it would be a mistake to evaluate her intellectual identity as a feminist, the basis of her effort was Islam nationalism, which was shaped by shared history and culture consideration and formed a basis for Ottoman Identity.
