Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the information in the book regarding child nutrition in the light of the current scientific knowledge by translating it into current Turkish language and abbreviating it. The book was among the studies done for preventing infant mortality during the first years of the Republic and an example to the public education for protecting and improving child health. This study will also provide a new source document to the Turkish Medical History.
Method: First the book was reviewed by the researchers. After the first evaluation, it was read with an academician, who is an expert of Turkish Language and Literature, and abbreviated in order to make it more articulate. After the abbreviation, the obtained information was interpreted in the light of current scientific knowledge.
Findings: The reviewed book offers information about infant mortality, child nutrition, and evaluation of the childs developmental characteristics, maternal health and more by using a plain language. It was written by Dr. Ali Vahid during a period of long wars, limited economic resources and also limited qualified man power. The book is about child health issues of the time, which is an important part of public health. Most of the information in the book is currently still valid and scientific and the book is considered as an important document.
Conclusion: It can be seen that the studies to prevent and diminish the infant mortality, which were carried on approximately a century ago, are in accordance with the current scientific approaches and a scientific methodology was followed. Studies that put emphasis on societys and especially mothers awareness and education about health were carried on as government policy. Thus the content of the book Memedeki çocuk nasıl beslenir? is important in terms of its plain language and providing practical answers to common questions.
